June 24, 1927 | "WT Carter Field" opens for business, on 400 acres of land owned by WT Carter Jr. |
1937 | City of Houston purchases airport, changes name to "Houston Municipal Airport". |
1938 | Renamed "Howard Hughes Airport", after the famous aviator and businessman. |
1938 | Name changed back to "Houston Municipal Airport", due to legal & regulatory problems. |
1940 | A modern passenger terminal, control tower, and hangers opened. These are now part of the "1940 Terminal Museum". |
1954 | Name changed to" Houston International Airport", and new passenger terminal opens. |
1967 | Name changed to "William P. Hobby Airport". |
1969 | All passenger flights move to the new George Bush Intercontinental Airport. General aviation and air-cargo traffic continues at Hobby Airport. |
1971 | Passenger flight resume at Hobby Airport. |

Houston Hobby's 1940 Air Terminal Museum opens in the old terminal buildings. |
September 2008 |
Houston Hobby Airport became a central staging area for emergency services, before and after Hurrican Ike. TSA, FEMA, and Army Corp of Engineers were involved in the efforts. |

As part of the airport's terminal renovation project, several major pieces of new artwork were installed at Houston Hobby. |

A security breach was reported at Hobby Airport, when a man ran from security agents at the passenger terminal. The airport was closed for about 30 minutes, until the man was apprehended. |

Homeland Security announces that Full-body security scanners will be installed at Houston Hobby Airport. These devices remain controversial, due to concerns about privacy. |

May 30, 2012 | Houston City Council approves Southwest Airline's proposal to begin international flights from Houston Hobby airport in 2015. |
May 2013 | Construction begins on the new International Terminal at Hobby. The new terminal will have gates for 5 aircraft, with custom inspection facilities for international travelers. |
July 2, 2013 | Frontier Airlines will begin offering nonstop air service between Delaware's New Castle Airport (ILG) and Houston's William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). Aircraft will be Airbus A320. |
2015 | SouthWest Airlines began international flights on March 9, 2015 to Aruba. Hobby Airport's new International Terminal is due to open in October, 2015. |
